Who Are We Now? - 2018
Do we have a good understanding of who we are? Do we have a good understanding of what we are about?
I work with people on a daily basis, and we figure out who it is that they are, and we figure out who it is that they want to be. It sounds like such a simple concept on the surface. If it is so simple, then why are there so many of us who aren’t quite sure if what we are doing is what we want to be doing? It’s because all of us don’t take a hard look at our process each day and see if it fits who we want to be. It’s something even I neglected for a little while to be consistent with: doing checks on what I want and who I want to be.
So I talk to my people in the world, as well as myself. We look at what takes away from our happiness and mental success. We examine the job or chosen college path and ask if it’s consistently what we want to be doing. We examine the friends we hang with and see if we hang with them because they make us laugh and have similar interests/ideology and our minds are naturally attracted to seeing them… or do we hang with them because we don’t have or know anything different? We ask questions like this and we sift it, seeing if the inevitable “tough days” are small percentage here and there… or if they are actually the majority. If we aren’t happy, it’s probably (definitely) time to make some changes.
This week I worked with a young lady who would call herself a 5 on a 10 scale as it pertains to appearance. We talked about social media and how Kim Kardashian and Beyonce have become America’s view of beautiful. I told her that I could see the truth to that. However, I don’t see that as the image everywhere. Where she lives, the “stick-thin” girl is what we aspire to be, is what she told me. I’d say that in some places, being ABOVE a certain weight is what we aspire to, as to not be the “stick-thin” person. The point is, there should be no “group of we” in aspirations of imagine. The individual should be and is responsible for deciding how they want to look, based primarily on their genetic makeup and what is healthy and possible within the individual body-type.
The same applies for what we like to read, or do we even like to read? What sports interest us, or do they at all? What food do we like? If we are paying our own bills, then we can choose to do whatever we want, as long as we aren’t hurting anyone physically. So pick two things for this week that made you happy in the past that you don’t do anymore. Or pick two things that you think would make you happy. Then TRY THEM THIS WEEK. Don’t wait. Don’t worry about approval. Just try them and see if one or both of them stick. If it works for you, use the process, and repeat!
